'Coming From Where I Come From" by Joe Allen, is an awesome book that exposed us to the 2Pac quote," Behind every sweet smile, there is a bitter sadness no one can see and feel." From this, we were able to teach students English and express our feelings about the quote. Great times!!
This sanctuary is so complex because it is diversified with many clans of monkeys. The monkeys in this sanctuary were so territorial that they didn't even go into other monkeys territory. In this sanctuary, there was a cemetery for all of the monkeys who passed away. Bali being a Hindu nation, showed their love for animals by how they exhausted them. This was one place we felt that.
When we first went to Mr. Batur, it was raining so we couldn't stay long and we didnt' get to see all of the volcano. Toward the end of our trip in Bali, a few of us decided to take that 2 hour trip one more time and it was so worth it. Look at its elusive beauty!
This was one of the most deliciously, flavorful parts of the trip. We enjoyed over 15 different flavors of tee and coffee. The most unique was the Luwak Coffee, a strong coffee, fermented by the Luwak before being cleaned.
There’s two ways to see Tanah Lot Temple, one when it’s in the ocean and one when it’s not. We were beyond curious when we saw it because we knew the ocean’s high tide was on its way within two hours, lol. We walked to this temple and along the way, got greetings by people holding snakes, selling gadgets, and praying to Hindu gods. It was an awesome time, one we won’t forget!! So proud of PBC students because we had a lot of amazing reflections just on this journey.
Shout to PBC! Going to Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta was a must because it connected with our wildlife volunteering that we would later do with Turtle Conservation Education Center in Bali. Over the years, with exception of this one, we’ve always prepped by volunteering at Oakland Zoo before traveling internationally and volunteering. Thank you Ragunan Zoo for being there to support! This was the largest zoo we had ever been to. Lots and lots of animals as well!!
This is one of our most exciting trips because we’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Indonesia. For months students have been studying Indonesia’s language, laws, traditions, food, and customs.
This was a special moment for PBC because it connected so well and it was action packed. This was PBC’s third time in our 8 year history volunteering with turtles; once in Costa Rica with Turtle Love and once at the Oakland Zoo. We were able to get a proper introduction to their challenges in Indonesia before cleaning the beach. After our beach clean, we cleaned each turtles habitat, made friends with them, filled their enclosures back up with clean water, prepped their food and fed them. We provided them with what we’ve been providing turtles around the world for years and that’s love. We want to thank the Turtle Conservation Education Center in Bali for making this happen! Also, we’d like to thank Kazan Law, Haron, Jessica, and Brian for their support! Lastly, none of this is possible without the support of OUSD parents, Castlemont High School, DestinyJay, and Jonathan Guy.
PBC’s Journey to Indonesia was a success! This was an absolute honor to be apart of! We were able to get access to President Obama’s middle school and his home from when he lived in Jakarta, Indonesia from age 6 to 10. Students visited Obama’s controversial statue that was relocated from a park to his school, a basketball court, his classroom, and his home. PBC even sent President Obama an email just to let him know that we would be taking East Oakland students to visit his school and home in Jakarta. Students never received a call, Zoom or email but we understand he’s a busy man. We all enjoyed every bit of it.
This was the most enjoyable cup of tea and coffee we’ve ever had. We tried over 15 flavors and all of them were so uniquely delicious. Pandan, Green Tea, Luwak, Coconut, Vanilla Bean, and Avocado were some of student’s favorite. Beautiful scenery, heartfelt people and great climate is stills the recipe for great times.
This was one of the most important experiences because of the direct learning that took place, the 10 scholarship offered we received for seniors, and the most hospitable administration and teachers.
Thank you Binus University for this educational experience!
